Dissociations of Lexical Function: Semantics, Syntax, and Morphology

چکیده
Aphasic patients who exhibit “asyntactic comprehension” show poor performance o n a sentence-picture matching task with semantically unconstrained sentences, such as “The cow bit the horse,” but good performance when the sentences are semantically constrained, such as “The boy threw the ball.” The assumption has been that such patients are able to interpret these latter sentences by relying solely on the meanings of the individual words, and that their intact lexical semantics can support some amount of sentence processing. We test this claim by investigating, in detail, the lexical semantics of an aphasic patient (JG), whose speech production is severely agrammatic and whose sentence-picture matching is asyntactic. We explore the semantics of JG’s lexicon for both morphologically simple and complex words. We find that word meanings are represented normally in his mental lexicon, and he is able to use this information to integrate words into phrases. In contrast, lexical syntactic and morphological processes are severely impaired. This pattern confirms that lexical semantics can support some limited amount of sentence processing in patients with asyntactic comprehension, and that different lexically based processes can be impaired differentially following brain damage.

The role of Persian causative markers in the acquisition of English causative verbs
This project investigates the relationship between lexical semantics and causative morphology in the acquisition of causative/inchoative-related verbs in English as a foreign language by Iranian speakers. Results of translation and picture judgment task show although L2 learners have largely acquired the correct lexico-syntactic classification of verbs in English, they were constrained by ...
متن کاملLexical Semantics and Selection of TAM in Bantu Languages: A Case of Semantic Classification of Kiswahili Verbs
The existing literature on Bantu verbal semantics demonstrated that inherent semantic content of verbs pairs directly with the selection of tense, aspect and modality formatives in Bantu languages like Chasu, Lucazi, Lusamia, and Shiyeyi. Thus, the gist of this paper is the articulation of semantic classification of verbs in Kiswahili based on the selection of TAM types. This is because the sem...

The goal of this investigation is to show how neuropsychological dissociations in aphasic language disorders can be explained with reference to explicit linguistic theories and how aphasiological data can help to find an optimal linguistic theory supposing, of course, that linguistic theory considers itself part of the study of cognition. Our topic is the interplay of lexical and nonlexical kno...
متن کاملComplex Predicates in Arrernte
Using the example of Murrinh-Patha, Seiss (2011) illustrates how Australian Aboriginal languages can shed light on the morphology-syntax interface: one aspect of their polysynthetic nature is that information often encoded in phrases and clauses in other languages is instead found in a single morphological word. In this paper, we look at another instance, the Australian Aboriginal language Arre...
متن کاملModelling Atypical Syntax Processing
We evaluate the inferences that can be drawn from dissociations in syntax processing identified in developmental disorders and acquired language deficits. We use an SRN to simulate empirical data from Dick et al. (2001) on the relative difficulty of comprehending different syntactic constructions under normal conditions and conditions of damage. We conclude that task constraints and internal co...
